Carnot COP (Refrigerator) (COP = T₂/(T₁ - T₂))
jee-mainjee-advancedneet-ug
COP = T₂/(T₁ - T₂)
What each symbol means
| Symbol | What it stands for |
|---|---|
| COP | Coefficient of Performance (dimensionless, can be > 1) |
| T₁ | Temperature of hot reservoir / surroundings (K) |
| T₂ | Temperature of cold reservoir / inside fridge (K) |
When to use this
Maximum COP for any refrigerator/heat pump operating between T₁ and T₂. COP can be > 1 (unlike efficiency). Relation with Carnot efficiency: COP = (1−η)/η = T₂/(T₁−T₂). MUST use Kelvin. For heat pump: COP_HP = T₁/(T₁−T₂) = COP_ref + 1.
