Swarts Reaction (R-Cl + AgF → R-F + AgCl↓ (also Hg₂F₂ or SbF₃))
jee-mainjee-advancedneet-ug
R-Cl + AgF → R-F + AgCl↓ (also Hg₂F₂ or SbF₃)
What each symbol means
| Symbol | What it stands for |
|---|---|
| R | Alkyl group |
| AgF | Silver fluoride (or Hg₂F₂, CoF₂, SbF₃) |
| AgCl↓ | Insoluble silver chloride precipitates |
When to use this
Metallic fluorides (AgF, Hg₂F₂, SbF₃) provide fluoride in a form that acts as nucleophile. NaF doesn't work because F⁻ is too highly solvated in polar solvents.
